Description
In the rolling hills of Kenya’s Rift Valley, the Kapkiyai Farmers Cooperative Society has transformed from a once all-male collective into a vibrant, women-led force for change. Grown at high elevations in Nandi Hills, this washed lot of SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, Batian, and K7 reflects not only the region’s rich soils and cool climate, but also the dedication of the women producers whose work has redefined the future of this cooperative.
Expect a lively, complex cup — sparkling citrus brightness meets sweet stone fruit and a refined, clean finish. Think mandarin orange, ripe peach, and delicate florals layered with a sugarcane sweetness and lingering herbal notes.
Our relationship with Kapkiyai comes through our sourcing partner, Vava Coffee, founded by Vava Angwenyi in 2009. A farmer, exporter, and activist, Vava has spent over a decade working to reshape the Kenyan coffee landscape by championing education, empowerment, and gender equity. Thanks to her leadership, and the resilience of producers like those at Kapkiyai, initiatives like Fairtrade certification and targeted agronomy training have helped increase both coffee quality and incomes across the board.
We’re honored to bring this beautiful, meaningful coffee to our menu — a reflection of Kenyan terroir, community strength, and the future of equitable coffee production.

At the Source
A decade ago, Kapkiyai Farmers Cooperative was made up entirely of male members. Women were essential to the work — tending the farms, carrying harvests down steep hills — yet remained on the margins of ownership and decision-making. That began to change with targeted agronomy training and a bold resolution to welcome women as full cooperative members.
